English grammar: Present simple:

Filed under: Tenses — Tags: — Mona Salem @ 11:53 am

We use the present simple to talk about actions we see as long term or permanent. It is a very common and very important tense.

Here, we are talking about regular actions or events

For example:

→They drive to the office every day.

→She does not come here very often.

→The news usually starts at 6:00 every evening.

→ Do you usually have bacon and eggs for breakfast?

Here, we are talking about fact

For example:

→We have two children.

→What does this expression mean?

→The sun rises in the east and sets in the west

………..

Rule 1: The present simple tense is used with these words:

Always – often- usually – every – sometimes – rarely – generally – regularly – seldom – never – hardly

→Every .. Day, morning, week, month, year, summer.

→At .. 4o’clock, noon, night, mid-night.

→In .. the morning, the ofternoon, January, the summer.

→On .. monday(s), monday morning(s), my birthday.

Rule 2: In the present simple we have to add (S) with he, she, and it.

For example:

→He lives in Cairo.

→She eats an apple.

→The Ship sails at ten tonight.

………

Rule 3: If the verb is ended with letter( y), we need to change this (y)  into (i) + (es) unless there is not  a vowel before it.

→Study + S ——-→ studies

→Fly + S ————→ flies

but with vowel before (y), will still (y)

→Play + S ——-→ plays

→Stay +S ——–→ stays

Rule 4: We also have to add (es) to ( SS. Sh, Ch, X, Z, O )

→I miss …………  She misses

→They wash …… She washes
